What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a holistic medical treatment which has evolved into effective system for whole health and wellness. Acupuncture practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) have utilized this safe and non-invasive method to help people to regain their health and stay healthy.
Acupuncture promotes natural healing through insertion of tiny needles that activate Qi energy throughout the body to help achieve balance within the body and mind.
What is Qi?
Qi is a vital energy that flows throughout 14 main meridians . The meridians are invisible pathways that connect to specific organs and glands. The meridian pathway flow to provide nourishment to every cell, organ, gland, muscle and tissue in the body. Physical and emotional trauma, lack of sleep and exercise, poor diet, can disrupt and influence the quality and balance of Qi that leads the body to a weakened state, illness, pain or disease can take place.
What does an acupuncturist do?
During the initial exam a full health history is taken. There will be many questions asked about the symptoms, digestion, lifestyle., sleep. Everything is important, so be ready for detailed questions and lengthy intake. A practitioner examines face, takes pulse and tongue diagnosis. Obtaining this information enables the practitioner to effectively diagnose and detect any specific imbalances of Qi that affected a person’s health ailments. The practitioner can then create a well-structured treatment plan.
How does acupuncture work?
Once the imbalance of Qi are detected, an acupuncturist will insert fine, sterile needles at specific acupoints along meridian pathways. This safe and painless insertion of needles can unblock the obstruction and balance Qi. When the needles open the obstruction, Qi can freely circulate throughout the body, providing adequate nourishment to cells, organs, glands, tissues and muscles. It releases endorphins that control pain and restore balance and harmony, as well as the body’s ability to heal itself ultimately leading to optimal health and well-being.
Is acupuncture Painful?
Acupuncture generally does not hurt. The needles are thin, hair-like in size with a gentle insertion should not cause any discomfort. Usually patients feel instantly relaxed during the treatment and do not feel any pain from the insertion. Sometimes, patients experience sensation of warmth, while other may experience sensation of subtle electric charge, some may experience sensation of lightness, or heaviness. Some report of feeling “like energy is circulating”. These are normal sensations during treatment. Some patients fall asleep or attain state of deep meditation.

How deep do needles go?
That depends upon the nature of the problem, the location of the points selected, patient’s size, age, constitution. Usually needles are inserted from ¼ to 1 inch in depth.
What should I do before and after the treatment?
Make sure you were comfortable clothing. It is recommended to eat before the treatment to avoid dizziness. It is recommended to avoid strenuous activities, such as exercises, home chores, lifting heavy objects, etc.
Does it hurt?
Generally, it is a safe and painless procedure. When the correct stimulus has been obtained, the patients should feel some tingling, heaviness, warming sensation either around the needle or traveling up or down the affected meridian, or energy pathway.
How many treatments will I need?
That depends upon the duration, severity, and nature of your complaint. You may need only a single treatment for an acute condition. A series of five to fifteen treatments may resolve many chronic problems. Some degenerative conditions may require many treatments over time.
Are needles clean?
Yes, acupuncture needles are clean. They are sterile, single-use, and disposed of after each treatment to ensure safety and hygiene.
Is there anything I need to do before receiving an acupuncture treatment?
Yes, the following suggestions will help you get the maximum benefits from your treatment.
Maintain good personal hygiene to reduce the possibility of bacterial infection.
To prevent loss, do not wear jewelry.
Wear loose clothing. Ideally, all the closing should be made from natural fibers. Do not have any tight fitting clothes or undergarments that will block energy flow. Women should not wear one-piece dresses. Avoid wearing tight stockings.
Avoid treatment when fatigued, hungry, full, or emotionally upset.
Is there anything I need to do while receiving acupuncture?
1. Relax. There is no need to be frightened. Ask your practitioner any questions you have along the way, so that you can get the most benefit possible from the treatment.
2. Do not change your position or move suddenly. If you are uncomfortable tell your practitioner. If dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath occurs, let you practitioner know, so that the needles can be readjusted or withdrawn.
