What Are Fibroids?
Fibroids, also called uterine fibroids, are noncancerous growths that develop in or on the walls of the uterus, made up of smooth muscle cells and connective tissue. These growths vary in size, ranging from as tiny as an apple seed to as large as a grapefruit or even larger. Fibroids can either grow or shrink over time, depending on hormonal changes and certain other factors.
Typically, fibroids in the uterus are most common in women between the ages of 30 and menopause, often decreasing in size after menopause. Studies show that 20% to 80% of women develop fibroids by age 50. Though the exact cause of their appearance is still unknown, studies suggest they may develop due to high levels of estrogen.
It is important to note that fibroids are almost always noncancerous. The belief exists because fibroids often present similarly to sarcomas. This is a rare type of cancer called leiomyosarcoma. Preexisting fibroids also do not lead to higher risks of developing cancer. According to research, fibroids turn into leiomyosarcoma in less than 1 per 1000 cases.
What Causes Fibroids
The exact cause of fibroids is still unclear, but they most likely appear due to high estrogen levels. During reproductive years, higher levels of estrogen and progesterone can trigger the growth of fibroids, especially during pregnancy. If estrogen levels are high and a person already has fibroids, they tend to swell. While lower estrogen levels, like those during menopause or certain medications like GnRH agonists, can shrink fibroids.
Genetics also play a role. Individuals with close relatives who have fibroids are also more likely to develop them. Some studies suggest that red meat, caffeine, and alcohol also lead to increased fibroid risk. While diets rich in fruits and vegetables may lower the risk.
Obesity is another factor increasing the risk of developing fibroids. Interestingly, childbearing reduces the risk of developing fibroids. It lowers with each birth given.
Symptoms of Fibroids
In many cases fibroids go unnoticed, as they often don’t produce any noticeable symptoms. However, when fibroid symptoms actually occur, they can cause quite a lot of discomfort.
Most common symptoms of uterine fibroids include heavy menstrual bleeding, which can even lead to anemia. They also include painful periods, lower back pain, and discomfort in the legs. Some people report constipation or a persistent sensation of fullness in the lower abdomen, especially when fibroids are larger than normal. Fibroids may also lead to increased frequency of urination and discomfort or even pain during sex.
Fibroids also negatively affect fertility, and cause complications during pregnancy or labor and sometimes increase the need for cesarean delivery. In some cases, removing them has been linked to improved conception rates.
Types of Fibroids
There are three types of fibroids. They are classified based on their location within or around the uterus. They are:
- Subserosal Fibroids. Considered the most common type, they develop on the outer surface of the uterus.
- Intramural Fibroids. They develop within the muscular walls of the uterus.
- Submucosal Fibroids. These grow into the uterine cavity, occupying the inner open space of the uterus.
In rare cases fibroids may become pedunculated. Meaning they grow on a stalk-like structure attached to the uterus. This unique growth pattern can lead to additional complications, including more difficult treatment.
Can Acupuncture Help With Fibroids?
Acupuncture is a natural, minimally invasive fibroids treatment. By targeting specific acupuncture points for fibroids, acupuncture can improve blood circulation in the pelvic area and help regulate hormone levels, which are usually linked to fibroid development. It can also reduce discomfort and bloating caused by fibroids.
Acupuncture for uterine fibroids works by addressing causes of their formation. This therapy also supports overall reproductive health. For women going through hormonal changes, acupuncture for menopause may be a reliable option to address mood swings, hot flashes, and other related symptoms.
Combining acupuncture and fibroids management can reduce the pain and inflammation, which is a great complementary method to traditional medical treatment. If you’re considering acupuncture for fibroids, you should seek the help of an experienced practitioner to develop a personalized treatment plan.

Acupuncture for Fibroids - FAQ
What is a Fibroid?
A fibroid, also known as a uterine leiomyoma or myoma, is a benign (noncancerous) growth that develops within the muscular wall of the uterus. Fibroids can vary in size, ranging from as small as a pea to as large as a melon. While they are not typically life-threatening, fibroids can sometimes lead to uncomfortable symptoms such as pelvic pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, or pressure on the bladder.
How Does Acupuncture Shrink Fibroids?
Acupuncture works by stimulating specific points on the body—most often using very thin needles—to regulate and harmonize the flow of energy (Qi) and blood. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, uterine fibroids can be influenced by stagnation of Qi, imbalances in hormone regulation, and poor blood circulation:
- Qi and Blood Circulation: By improving blood flow to the pelvic region, acupuncture may help reduce the excess growth of fibroid tissue.
- Hormonal Regulation: Acupuncture has been associated with balancing certain hormones, which can potentially slow down or reduce fibroid development.
- Stress Reduction: High stress can aggravate hormonal imbalances. Acupuncture’s calming effect can reduce stress hormones, creating a more balanced endocrine environment.
While research into acupuncture’s direct impact on fibroid size continues, many patients find symptomatic relief—such as decreased pain and lighter menstrual bleeding—through consistent treatment.
Can Acupuncture Cure Fibroids Completely?
No single treatment—conventional or holistic—offers a guaranteed “cure” for every individual with fibroids. Acupuncture can be a valuable complementary approach to help manage symptoms, address underlying imbalances, and support overall well-being. Some individuals report a noticeable reduction in fibroid size or related symptoms, but results vary. It is best to discuss personalized treatment plans with your healthcare provider to determine whether a combined or integrative approach is appropriate for your situation.
How Many Acupuncture Sessions are Needed for Fibroid Relief?
The number of treatments required varies by individual and depends on factors like the size and location of fibroids, symptom severity, and overall health. Many patients start noticing improvements in symptoms after a few weeks of regular sessions (e.g., once or twice a week). A typical course of treatment might last several months, complemented by lifestyle adjustments and supportive therapies such as herbal medicine, dietary changes, or stress management.
